- Once Barry got to high
- school, he became a
- three-sport athlete --
- playing football, basketball,
- and baseball -- for Serra
- High, in San Mateo, California. But baseball
- was his true love. In three varsity seasons
- for Serra, Barry batted .404 overall. In his
- senior season, Barry hit .467 and was
- named a high school All-American.

- The San Francisco Giants drafted Barry in
- 1982, but he decided to put off professional
- baseball and attend college instead. In his
- three-year career at Arizona State University,
- he hit .347, blasted 45 home runs, and drove
- in 174 runs. He also tied an NCAA record
- with seven consecutive hits in the
